Stashboxx Review

Stashboxx is the perfect album for fans of J Dilla and D'Angelo's 90s production; DJ Harrison maintains this style while breathing fresh air into it. Stashboxx plays less like a linear experience and more like a journey through different concepts. It is much more akin to a beat tape than an album, with drastic switches between some tracks and smooth transitions with others.

Rather than making the album less cohesive, it keeps you on your feet while listening; never track overstay. It's welcome, though it sometimes leaves you wanting more. This record introduces more variants into DJ Harrison's style, getting grittier with this mixing than on releases like MonoTones, which would expand later with records like Stylish and Tales from the Old Dominion. Overall, it's a solid release from DJ Harrison, as impressive as ever as a multi-instrumentalist and producer. 100% worth the hour; go give it a listen! :)

    Giza

    2:33

The song beigns with these ambigous chords over the core percussion, then it's revealed to be F13 to Cm9. The tape echo on the cowbell brings a hypnotic atmosphere to it, and how the the second synth and piano double down on the guitar makes for an addictive listen!

    Side Effects

    2:45

VERY D'ANGELO; it really sounds like an extention of Insturmental #1 from the Voodoo Sessions. This song is one of the rare occasions where reverse drums actually sound good!!

    Let Me Know

    2:04

Such a beautiful chord progression on this track, and once again, Harrison gets close to the Voodoo / Brown Sugar wahwah vibe. The upright pianobrings the whole mix together!

    Feel the Burn

To be honest, this should have been the intro to the record! It really reminds me of something from 1970-1974, kind of similar to the Library Music that was coming out of Europe at the time. Very fun song to cover as well!!
